Superyacht Leadership Academy (SLA)
The Superyacht Leadership Academy (SLA) was established by Martin Mainey and Paul Bridge to address the critical role of leadership within the yachting industry. The academy provides specialized coaching and training programs designed to enhance the capabilities, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence of Captains and senior crew members.
The academy’s leadership coaching offers a personalized, one-on-one process for Heads of Departments, including Chief Officers, Engineers, and Pursers. These sessions focus on identifying individual strengths and developing strategies to manage teams more effectively, drive service standards, and foster a positive onboard culture.
By improving communication and conflict resolution, the coaching helps ensure a high-performance environment that directly enhances the guest experience.
In addition to coaching, SLA provides structured leadership training that covers five essential habits for yacht leaders:
- Clear Communication: Mastering difficult yet essential crew conversations.
- Self-Awareness: Understanding one’s personal impact on the team and working environment.
- Emotional Intelligence: Managing personal emotions and reading the emotional needs of the crew.
- Conflict Resolution: Building a culture where expectations are clear and friction is minimized.
- Managing Performance: Establishing a vision with clear accountability and trust.
The academy is also the exclusive GUEST Training Provider for Unit 40 of the Yacht Owner Representative Program (YORP), an IAMI-accredited course. This specific unit focuses on the skills required to represent an owner’s interests, from establishing project goals to negotiating objectives directly with the shipyard.
