Lowell North, an engineer and Olympic champion, started North Sails in 1957 by applying methodical engineering principles to traditional sailmaking. That systematic approach turned a centuries-old craft into an exact science.

Over the decades, North Sails grew from a small loft into a global leader in sailmaking and the cornerstone division of North Technology Group.

Engineers and sailmakers at North Sails focus continuously on structural innovation. The company holds the patent for 3Di, a composite construction process that creates sails acting almost like rigid foils, holding shape under extreme loads.

Thanks to this breakthrough, North Sails supplies performance sails to top-tier fleets across the globe, including America’s Cup syndicates, Grand Prix teams, ocean racing crews, and superyachts.

Cruising sailors and one-design racers rely on North Sails as well, with the brand accumulating more national, world, and Olympic class titles than all competitors combined.

In 2014, North Sails expanded beyond sailcloth into technical clothing with the launch of North Sails Apparel. The collection applies the company’s deep experience with weather-defying materials to everyday gear, creating outerwear designed to withstand heavy wind and rain both offshore and on land.
