International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS)
Formed in 1991, the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) is an award-winning, independent, and non-political organisation dedicated to promoting professionalism, recognition, and training for surveyors worldwide. As the leading professional body in its field, the Institute boasts a global membership of more than 1,000 professionals across over 100 countries.
It serves as a vital representative for the industry, engaging with governmental and non-governmental organisations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), coastguards, P&I clubs, insurance companies, brokers, and boat owners. The Institute defines its core mission through the delivery of guidance reports and expert services to transport organisations and all bodies connected with trade and operations.
One of its primary roles is acting as an MCA — approved Certifying Authority, authorised under contract by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency to code boats up to 24 metres for commercial use. This technical authority is backed by a robust management structure, including a President, a Management Board of experienced industry veterans, and a dedicated head office team based at Murrills House in Portchester, UK.
In 2024, the Institute’s commitment to quality was further recognised when it was awarded ISO 9001 certification by DNV for its training services. Professional development is a cornerstone of the organisation, which offers an extensive range of education programmes and distance learning qualifications. These programmes cover specialized areas such as yacht and small craft surveying, cargo and commercial ship inspections, and marine corrosion.
To support its members and the wider boating world, the Institute maintains a comprehensive searchable database of qualified surveyors, accessible through its website and the acclaimed Marine Surveyor Search App. Members also receive “The Report” magazine — a detailed quarterly publication — alongside monthly news bulletins and technical communiqués that highlight key industry news and opinions.
