Founded in 1926 in Novara, Italy, Gottifredi Maffioli has a long history of pioneering innovation in the production of high-performance ropes. The company initially supported the textile industry with natural fibers, but then switched to experimenting with synthetic materials such as nylon, which marked a major turning point in its technical evolution.

In 1954, the firm developed the world’s first synthetic ropes, which played a critical role in the first successful ascent of K2. This landmark achievement led the company to adopt the silhouette of the mountain as its official symbol, representing a commitment to overcoming extreme challenges through engineering excellence.

The company entered the yachting sector in the early 1980s after being commissioned to create racing lines for Azzurra, the first Italian challenger in the America’s Cup. This success established Gottifredi Maffioli as a leading technical reference for elite sailing competitions, supporting legendary teams such as Luna Rossa and Alinghi.

Today, the Novara headquarters functions as an applied research laboratory where the team collaborates with major fiber manufacturers like DuPont and DSM. By working with advanced materials such as Kevlar, Dyneema, and PBO, the firm continues to develop innovative solutions for the most prestigious racing sailboats in the world.

Guided by family passion, the company maintains strong relationships with both suppliers and sailing teams to push the boundaries of performance. Beyond technical development, the firm is committed to sustainability and the principles of a circular economy, aiming to minimize its environmental and social impact while following global development goals.

This position has an effect on the company’s behavior, through concrete initiatives, among which:

  • 30% of the total energy consumed comes from Renewable Sources;
  • 100% of Gottifredi Maffioli’s Dyneema® lines are produced from a Biobased source;
  • Lean Manufacturing methodology is applied to work in One-Piece-Flow and avoid unnecessary stock, reduce workers stress and resources consumption;
  • Local suppliers are preferred, wherever possible, in order to support local economy and reduce transport impact;
  • Packaging is reused as much as possible, reusing material from suppliers for Gottifredi Maffioli’s own shipping needs, and sending the remainder to recycling;
  • Collection plans are implemented, for used spools, for reuse in production in a circular economy perspective;
  • Most part of the company’s process waste yarns (Polyester, Polyamide, Aramid, Zylon) are recycled or reused in secondary production processes;
  • Active participation in R&D project with Dyneema® for recycling waste yarns and used ropes.
